The UK's best coastal drives

Nothing improves a road like the sea beside it. Five drives where the coast does the work.

The Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland

Belfast to Portrush with the A2 pinned between the Antrim glens and the sea, finishing at the Giant's Causeway. Regularly ranked among the world's great drives and somehow still underrated. The full route makes a perfect one-day epic.

Exmoor's coast road (A39)

Porlock Hill's 1-in-4 hairpins, then high above the Bristol Channel to Lynmouth. Sea one side, moor the other. Our Coast and Moor loop brings you back over the tops past the ponies.

Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters (B2103)

England's white-cliff drive: out of Eastbourne, past the lighthouse, tea at Birling Gap. Short, spectacular and perfect for a summer evening. The loop from Eastbourne takes under two hours with stops.

Applecross and the NC500's west side

The stretch from Applecross to Durness is the best 200 miles of coast in Britain. If five days is too many, just drive this part of the North Coast 500 and keep the rest for next year.

The Llyn Peninsula, Wales

Aberdaron, whistling sands and lanes that end in beaches. No single famous road; the whole peninsula is the point.

Coast roads, ready to go
