Sections hit 33 percent (1 in 3), with hairpins mid-gradient. Any healthy modern car will climb it; the challenge is control, not power. Use first gear early, keep revs steady, and never stop on the steep sections if you can avoid it.

The etiquette that keeps it moving

• Uphill traffic generally has priority; descending cars can hold position more safely.
• Use passing places properly and early. Eye contact and a wave sort out most stand-offs.
• Cyclists earn every metre here; give them all the space and patience you have.

When to go, and when not to

Early morning or evening in summer; the pass gets busy from mid-morning. Never in ice or snow: it is routinely the first road in England to become undriveable, and recovery is expensive and slow. In heavy rain the descents demand real brake discipline: low gear, engine braking, no riding the pedal.

What not to bring

Caravans, trailers, motorhomes over 6m and nervous passengers. The A595 around the coast is the sensible alternative and pretty in its own right.

Worth stopping for
