CarPlay navigation apps: what your car can actually run

CarPlay turned every dashboard into an app platform, but navigation on it has rules of its own. Here is how it works and what to expect.

How CarPlay navigation works

CarPlay apps do not mirror your phone screen. Apple gives navigation apps a strict template system: the map, the manoeuvre panel, and a limited set of buttons. The app supplies the route and instructions; the car renders them. That is why every nav app on CarPlay feels related, and why some phone features do not appear on the dash.

Who can build CarPlay navigation?

Any developer with Apple's navigation entitlement, which Apple grants specifically to genuine navigation apps. Google Maps, Waze and Apple Maps all run there, alongside independents like us. The entitlement exists so the dashboard stays distraction-safe.

Why apps behave differently on the dash

• Voice and instructions come from the app, so quality varies more than the visuals.
• Route thinking happens in the app: if the phone app only optimises for speed, the dashboard version will too. Scenic routing has to exist in the app to exist on the dash.
• Extras differ: speed-camera alerts, stop-skipping and waypoint handling are app decisions, not CarPlay ones.

Practical tips

• Wired CarPlay is more reliable than wireless adapters for long trips.
• Start the route on the phone before you drive off; the dash picks it up instantly.
• If CarPlay misbehaves, unplug and replug beats rebooting the car's head unit nine times out of ten.
