The best family bike trails in the UK

The best family rides share three features: no cars, no hills and something good to eat in the middle. Old railway lines deliver all three.

The Camel Trail, Cornwall (up to 13 miles)

Padstow to Bodmin along the estuary: dead flat, all gravel, bike hire at both ends and the obligatory crab sandwich in Padstow. Ride early in summer; it is popular for every good reason. Route and stops here.

The Monsal Trail, Peak District (8.5 miles)

The most dramatic family ride in England: the Headstone Viaduct, four lit tunnels and limestone dales the whole way, with zero gradient because trains hate hills. Hire at Hassop or Blackwell Mill. Full trail here.

The Strawberry Line, Somerset (11 miles)

Yatton to Cheddar through orchards and a bat-friendly tunnel under the Mendips. Gentle, green and finishes near the gorge for a big day out. Route here.

Make it succeed

Plan the turnaround before anyone is tired, not after. Out-and-backs beat loops with kids: half the distance decision-making, and the cafe works twice.
